Thanks Alex. I use libavcodec as shared library in linux.
Patent: I'm interested in mpeg1 layer2(mp2 not mpeg2 audio) audio encoding
and mpeg2 video encoding. Encoding I mean compression from raw content +
encoding to the particular format. 
There are so many products(including open source products) in the market
with this audio/video codecs. so i don't think royalties have to be paid.
