You're considering only a simplest or, I'd say, even trivial case,
when executable, being distributed, is the direct result of object
file compilation. In real life these are mostly only freeware and
open-source software. Real commercial projects usually use more or
less complex protection against cracking. Just don't tell me that
any crack-protection is a deadend game. The fact is that most of
real commercial projects use it in some form. In such case it is
just impossible to distribute anything but the specially created
executable.
And we care why exactly?
Let me rephrase your question:
"hi ffsuckers,
I want to steal your work and get away with it because my little
weewee is affraid of getting its ass sued off. Please help,
Alex"
Our answer:
"You'd better get a good lawyer and make sure whatever the hell you do
is compliant, or else we will indeed sue your ass off."
For the rest, see the legal page on ffmpeg.org. It doesn't help you, I
know, and that's because we don't want to support the crap you're
apparently trying to accomplish.
(And yes,we require every and all iPhone apps to distribute object
files. This might destroy their business model because we can freely
relink their apps. We don't care.)
