dear friends and colleagues,

as you are probably aware, over the last 6 weeks people in turkey have
participated in peaceful street protests, and ensuing neighborhood
forums, that became popularly known as #occupygezi or #direngezi. the
protests are a reaction to the government's introduction of increased
constraints' on people's fundamental rights, as well as their
building/investment-driven economic policies that decrease the quality
of life in already congested public spaces all around turkey. although
the protesters have insisted on peaceful demonstrations and made only
what could be seen as very simple political demands, the government has
opted to counter #occupygezi with police violence, arrests, and dubious
legal measures.

the text below is a statement from the association of alternative
informatics on the #occupygezi with a focus on censorship, mass media,
and social media.
alternatif bilisim (alternative informatics) is one of the more
prominent digital rights groups in turkey. throughout the last years
they have been following up on censorship activities, challenging dpi
and filtering practices, demanding a proper data protection law, and
also taking a critical stance towards increased surveillance and
criminalization of internet use, as evident also in the recent arrests
of 38 twitter users in association with #occupygezi.

the statement was released about two weeks ago, but since everyday
further actions associated with #occupygezi occur and their participants
all around turkey are continuing to be subject to violence and
criminalization, i expect the statement to still be timely and relevant.
i also expect that the analyses they offer, which are informed by the
local situation, is likely to have relevance also internationally.

please do feel free to distribute this statement to your networks.
thank you.
s.
