Yes, I certainly remembered "_p" from the jargon file:

http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/p-convention.html

but that was not enough for me to dismiss an otherwise useful suffix for
naming variables.

By "_p", I meant "parameter". "private" is a good interpretation as well.
