Yes, the subdomain_id values are changing throughout the simulation.

Actually, what happens is that in a certain situation I collect the 
elements that will belong to the subset using certain criteria, and I 
then just use (one bit of) subdomain_id as a flag.  Each time I do 
this, the subset can be different.
