That's how the racket works. It's time they're getting paid for and you're
not. In Chicago I saw an offer to a whole room full to plead to save
waiting time.

I got caught in a worse racket a few years ago here in the Bronx. The bus
stop sign post was knocked down on a Saturday, they must've ticketed a line
of us parked there, and by the time I returned Sunday to take a picture, the
sign post had been re-erected.

"BTW, the Canadian dollar hit parity with the U.S. in 1974; I remember
because I went to Niagara Falls with my camp and was stunned."

It also went to slightly more than the US dollar in 1970 (Nixonomics),
during our trip there, so we lost on the exchange both ways. The Canadian
dollar had always been about $.90 before that during my childhood.

"IIRC, the US dollar made a comeback in 1975 and the two haven't been close
until now."

Yeah, the Canadian dollar slipped lower vs. US than it'd been for a long
time during that interval. It got down to around $.75, didn't it? I wonder
whether NY Thruway toll booths will take it at par now; they should give a
better break than banks, to encourage traffic from Canada.
