            Bug ID: 170959
Summary: What about Markdown? import, export and editing
                    (new-feature suggestion)
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: unspecified
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: medium
         Component: Writer
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

hi,

LO Writer is an extremely complex environment to work in, I mean, to write, and
sometimes, in due cycles, one will feel an urge to break out from that.

Markdown needs no introduction, but it is worth noting that what writers
(people) do with a markdown application is **the same writing** as what we do
with **Writer** :) (I'm aware that markdown syntax isn't interpreted here :))

So, on the practical level, markdown editors and LO Writer are parallel
entities :) They are even competing ones. Yes, like a musician will pick a
guitar when s/he has a tune in their head, so is a writing tool for a writer
(person) always an instrument of choice.

Moreover, all the writing that Vonnegut did for Breakfast of Champions, for
example, can be done in markdown, not to mention that it can be done in
markdown the most easily and effectively.

Markdown is FREEDOM even compared to LIBRE office :)
____________

So, it seems to be high time LO grew a bridge towards markdown :)

Evidently, it could start with (including):
adding an ::import markdown:: function,
and logically,
adding an ::export as markdown:: function, too...

With these two new functionalities tons of conversion problems that happen on
copy-paste will be purged :)

## EXPORT-IMPORT

Both importing and exporting should take place on a simple level, without
activating LO's intelligent mechanisms (including XML and the ZIPPING).
With importing, LO should be "dumb", understanding only the basics of the
structure :)

With exporting, likewise.
This time, to be sure, I'm talking about a LO document being exported. A
complex document being distilled to pure markdown.

Sounds like a huge task... But it only takes forgetting information, like in
that PHP function: strip_tags.. (and keep only what you need).
I mean, I believe that it can be done in a magically simple way.

## EDITING?

Well, this is the interesting part...
Cause LO writer doesn't make it possible to edit text as text only.
(even if you open a .txt file, LO will treat it as an ODT (if I see it right).

Maybe this should be changed, too! :)

If you save a document as ".txt", or open a ".txt" file, no bald or italic or
h1 or p should be added :) If you want to add formatting that belong to a LO
document (or HTML), you should first "convert" your document to the ODT format,
declaring that you're open to editing on that level.

Markdown could be handled like text. But with a live preview (but only when the
extension is ".md" or ".txt").

=====
Text editing and markdown editing should happen in a dedicated "text-only" LO
window.
=====

Of that window ... I have a vision :) :)

FULL SCREEN !!

I mean, isn't full screen like a pure text editor? :)
What an eerie resemblance!

Switching to a text-editor window, that is, editing in text-only mode, could
start like going FULL SCREEN.
Add to this a dark mode switch, and we're right there :)

______
I hope I'm not talking about something that's banal already...
Or, wait a second, I hope, instead, that this has been brought up already, and
that it's all underway...

Either way, I hope it will soon be reality :)

Peter
