Using the touchpad shouldn't make any difference, unless you've configured it in a particular way that is out of the ordinary. In table edit mode, you shouldn't need to do anything other than touchpad tap on the field type, on the left hand side of the touchpad. You shouldn't need to bring up a context menu for this.
