Usability-wise it makes a lot of sense to keep the arrows rather than replacing
them by a list or colors – they give a directly understandable mapping
(assuming that the user knows what an arrow is).

Edge bundling (as in Buovjaga’s 1st comment) could be a nice solution. What
also might work and, depending on the drawing layer we use might or might not
be easy, is making arrow shafts *slightly* transparent.

The performance issues would probably need profiling of the code.
