I do wonder how difficult it would be to create libre replacements for these applications. If you rerouted the DNS on your home network, you could probably intercept the communications between the bed and the server. But it's probably an HTTPS API. So you'd need to hope that the bed doesn't do certificate validation or pinning for its comms. I doubt there's a way to add a MITM cert to a bed's chain of trust. What a strange sentence. Eight Sleep manufactures luxury beds for the home market. I wonder if there are beds in hospitals, care facilities and such which are similarly connected to outside servers. Crew dormitories of Japanese railroads have special beds which crest up at the middle to ensure that the occupant wakes up. Similar devices may be installed in military facilities, fire stations, airline crew dorms, etc. Making such devices dependent upon an outside server would be a bad idea.
