Of course you are not getting enough voltage to charge the battery and you have all of that wonderful hash on the line from the alternator and the switches and relays popping on and off and spiking the input to your Lib. You might get away with it for years and then one day the Lib will die and all the savings might look small in comparison to the two pound block that won't even make a good anchor. Good luck and consider an all perils insurance policy like I have. (Inland Marine Policy) I cannot replace my L50, good cases, proper protection and care on my part will give me the maximum life it has to offer. I don't want this to seem like a flame, it is experience from years of cutting corners and later regretting it. We each have to cut our own corners. Old men don't charge machine gun nests, we know we might die. In regard to the adapter at Fry's Electronics. I went there at lunch. The brand is "Nesco." Normal price is $59.99, sale $49.99. I don't like it myself. Unlike the Targus, it has an adjustable switch on it and tip adapters like the universal PS that RS sells for 3/4.5/6/7.5/9 volt. The tips can be plugged in + or - tip. From experience, If I can hook it up wrong, I will, sooner or later. (Forgot I used it for 21 volts last time, etc.) The + or - isn't a problem with most machines as they have an isolation diode at the input to protect against people like me. (Called "Idiot proofing") The Targus I believe is a smart tip, If it fits the computer, the box outputs the proper voltage.
