Subject: HDD/HDC failure - repair strategy questions
Thanks again to all who have followed my posts about the HDD/HDC failure on
my 6 month old 110.
It's now with the Malaysian Toshiba distributor. If it's the HDC, they will
replace the motherboard under warranty - they even have one in stock. If
it's the hard drive, I have to decide what to do.
They can replace it under warranty with another (identical) 4.3Gb drive, but
I don't get the old one back so I have to kiss any hope of seeing my data
again goodbye (not very appealing).
Or I can spring for a new drive to be fitted (see my other post, they only
recommend the standard 4.3Gb or an upgrade to 6Gb) and I can have the old
one back - and attempt to retrieve my data at some point in the future.
Unfortunately the drives are ridiculously expensive - in the region of
600-700 USD!!!
So - this is the part where I want to confirm my best strategy...
Q1: I understand I might be able to purchase an identical used drive and
swap the "external" components of the drive and maybe get my data back that
way.
Anybody actually tried this?
Is it as straightforward as it sounds?
Anybody got a functioning 4.3Gb (Libretto 110 OEM) drive for sale, and if
so, for how much?
Q2: Plugging my drive into a desktop as a 'slave' drive - am I any more
likely to be able to get at my data that way than when it's installed in the
Libretto (presuming the Libretto HDC is not at fault)?
As always - thanks for any and all suggestions, comments, etc - very much
appreciated.
