You need to edit the 'display' section of /etc/X11/XF86Config to include 
(e.g.) 'virtual 800 600' (no quotes) after the bit that says "640x480" 
(which does have quotes)

Backup the original config file first (cp XF86Config XF86Config.old) and 
make sure you're waking up in text mode for testing. You can safely put the 
'virtual' line in every section of the display section...I always make the 
wrong guess when I just have one!

AFAIK all the default messages fit into an 800*600 virtual screen...
