I replaced the hard disk. That took care of the HDC error.

BTW, I ran a utility on the old drive about 1 week before it failed called 'SpinRite
5.0". It is a program that subjects the drive to worst-case read/write scenarios over
about an 8 hour timeframe in an attempt to find any weakness before they might become
a problem. Kind of like Norton Disk Doctor or Scandisk on steroids.
I am wondering if anyone out there has ever heard of SpinRite damaging older (or any)
hard disks?

  It does

I had exactly the same on a Libretto 110.
Mine would boot to a DOS prompt from a floppy, and that was it.

Toshiba replaced the HDD under warranty.

As I understand it, a faulty HDC will produce exactly the same symptoms and
  requires motherboard replacement.
