If you lose power, or crash (not that that ever happens!) then the default extfs2 system has to check every inode on the system to make sure it's pointing at something useful - which fortunately doesn't take as long as ms scandisc - but can still take several minutes for a big disc. Reiserfs only has to check the files that were in use, and as it knows where they are, it's much quicker to start up. It's said to be a little slower than extfs2 as it also fills in the gaps that get left behind with files that don't fit the sector size exactly, though you can disable this option. It's definitely worth it on a laptop - but the bad nes is that you can't (AFAIK) change a running extfs2 to reiserfs without a reformat. A possibility I haven't investigated yet is extfs3 which is also a journalling system and I believe this can be converted to.
