The problem with that is the light goes through the LCD once but its got nothing good to reflect off (in as I understand the backing is deliberately designed to NOT reflect to avoid the double-image problem like you do with your standard reflective LCD such as that on your wristwatch). Replacing that backing with something reflective would result in a clearer picture without the backlight but it'll result in a problem of double image (although if the reflective layer was more diffuse then perhaps it'd not be as big a problem). Of course, Palm-style PDAs get across that problem by having the reflective layer right up against the LCD itself ...
