SmartMedia to PC card adapters but they cost an arm and a leg ... or are CF
cards a lot closer to PCMICA (and hence their adapters would be a lot
cheaper)?

CD cards have the almost exact same pin layout as PCMCIA. The only
difference is physical size. So a CF/PC card adapter contains nothing but
wires that connect two connectors. SmartMedia and other flash memory cards
do not have this interface logic built in. The adapter needs to have its own
circuit to support the PCMCIA interface. That's why these adapters are much
more expensive.

think its called the C-450 in the US) but the downside is that the only ways
to get images out of it is either through USB or SmartMedia, neither of
which is an easy proposition for the Libby.

True unless you got a L100/110.

digital cameras go? Anyone got any figures for time taken?

It's 115kbps vs 12mbps. It is VERY SLOW.
