One other thing is unless the internal resistance of the battery is closely matched, 
in 
parallel, they'll charge at differant rates. So one will reach a full charge faster 
than 
the other and if charging is cut off one can be undercharged. In AA cells I've seen 
differances in resistances of over 5 ohms which is quite a bit in current. This 
matters 
more as the cells age an the internal resistance gets greater.
