Its difficult to put ac sources like transformers in parallel because they have to be very closely matched. With most dc sources its safe to do. You are absolutely correct. I am sleepier than usual. They looked definitely like parallel pairs at a glance. I will look at them again over the weekend to make sure, triggered a question mark when I saw the arrangement. It is true that there is a whole carging board in the battery. However the paired cells are wired very simply to it, looked like each pair had 2 leads to the board.
