Well the problem is CD-DA isn't implemented at the file system level (which is where 
your shared drives would work), its a hardware thing (to the extent that the CD-ROM 
drive actually needs to IMPLEMENT CD-DA ... notice that really old CD-ROM drives won't 
do it). The CD-DA program will need to run on the same box as the CD-ROM drive itself.

I guess you could say you're not barking up the wrong tree in the sense that what you 
were looking for was really up a lamp pole ... heh
