Tried the brute force 'Try every drive you can get your hands on' trick?
Right now, I'll do $100, only if I get to keep the existing 2gb or
bigger

Dunno about where you are but round here the asking prices for L50/70's is
about 3/4 the asking prices for L100/110's (at least thats the case with
the exceedingly small sample that are actually getting sold round here). I
sold my 16MB L50 with a 6 gig hard drive for $500AUD (about $250USD) and
got a 64MB L100 with a 6 gig hard drive for $800AUD (about $400USD) for
instance (and the prices matched reasonably what they were going for in the
classified ads round here) ... neither with any accessories except advanced
port replicators and AC adapters.
