Subject: Win98/70CT audio playback: A lost cause?
I'm wondering if I'm the only once having this
problem, or if I'm one of few people playing MP3s on a
70CT for as long as I tend to do.
Does anyone have a 50ct or 70CT set up with Win98 that
has been able to consistently play MP3s for hours at a
time without the playback starting to click
significantly after an hour or so?
I've been battling this problem for years at this
point. I've tried fresh installations of Win98,
different hard drives, different versions of several
MP3 players (Winamp, MusicMatch, Foobar2000), updating
ASPI drivers. But I just can't seem to eradicate
those little devils for good.
I recall John Ms post about how Win98 just wasn�t
designed with accurate audio functions in mind. But
there must be plenty of people with at least systems
other than these Libbys that don�t have this clicking
problem.
I wonder if I could ask a few listers with 50/70s and
a bunch of MP3s to do a test for me. Just leave your
Libbys playing MP3s for at least an hour or more, and
see if they also find those clicks starting to appear
at some point.
I�m convinced at this point that the problem is heat
related... at least for me. I�ve done this test on
both my 50 and 70. The clicks will stop after letting
them sit for 5-10 minutes, but then pop up again in
45-60 minutes.
My 100 has been out of service until recently. But
with Win2000 on a small HDD now, I find 99.999% of the
clicks gone for the most part (though I am hearing a
few here and there). I don�t know if that�s because
of Win2000, the 166MHz CPU, or a combination of both.
On a related topic, I wonder if anyone with a 110 has
ever tried out Foobar2000, and has been able to get
the equalizer in Foobar2000 to work without MP3
playback stuttering. As I recall when I had the 100
O/Ced to 266, FB2K just required more resources than
the system was able to deliver.
