Subject: Suggestions for a 16bit combo 56k/NIC?

My post on this from a couple days back never made it
to the list what with the problem Dan had with the
server... so here's a re-write/update:

Can anyone suggest a good old PCMCIA combo 56k
modem/NIC card to use on the older 50/70CT Libbys?

Here's what I've gleaned from the archives:

Linksys PCMLM56 <Expensive
Bromax BIX520 <can't find any
3Com 10/100LAN+56K 3CCFEM556 <looks good, lots on EBay
Xircom CEM56-100BC <Xircom's run hot, at leat mine
Psion <Neils choice, but only see on EBay UK

I'd like to get something that connects via dialup
reliably at 49+ kbps. My Xircom has never made a
dialuo connection any faster than 42kbps. An the
Xircom always ran very hot.

This because:

My old Xircom Credit Card Ethernet 10/100+ Modem 56,
model CEM56-100 just stopped working on the Ethernet
side. It doesn't connect to the home network, and the
LEDs on the dongle don't light at all anymore.

I suspect it's a bad pin socket connector. I plugged
the card in one morning, and it hit something, not
sliding in as usual. When I got it in, the NIC side
was dead. I can only see a little divot out of the
edge of one of the pin connectors. The metal socket
inside looks like it's there. So I don't quite know
why the NIC isn't working. I've slid it in and out of
every PCMCIA socket in the 500/70/100CT and both EPRs.
I only get a small flash out of one of the dongle
LEDs for a split second, and then nothing.

Anyone ever attempt pulling a PC card modem apart and
attempt troubleshooting and fixing it?

Meanwhile suggestions on a reliable 16 bit combo 56k
modem/NIC that people have hadsuccess with would be
greatly appreaciated.

Thx

Matt
