Okay... So what I was seeing was the correct behavior for this notebook. That is, it is >not< set up to be able to load drivers for CD-ROM support via a Win98 boot floppy. Good. I was worried there may have been some damage to the system.

I did check BIOS, and the boot priority is CD-ROM > FDD > HDD, so I'm set there. And it looks like it's got the correct CD-ROM drive, as the very look of the drive matches that of the notebook. That, and we know the original owner, and it would seem the CD-ROM drive was probably part of the original package.

David's comment about the possibility that it may require not powering it on when booting from a Windows 98 installation CD is another point that will be good to keep in mind.
