Subject: Re: [LIB] Windows Update - Good or bad?

For me, I simply stopped at IE 5.5 + security updates for the Win98.
No real need for latest verisons of WMP since the Libretto is too slow for any
fancy videos, and ffdshow takes care of any other codec on the planet of
significance (we're talking divx/xvid,etc here).

IE6 will run fine, but will simply take up more RAM, which is limited on the
Libretto.

The way to speed the Libretto up? Make sure as few programs are running in
memory as possible in the background, and make sure you don't needlessly
upgrade to the latest 'version' of anything since that usually means they take
up more resources and RAM w/o doing much new. (eg. Might even simply leave it
at IE 5.0 and run the lighter Opera 8.5 free instead if you want speed; but I
use Mozilla because it's more powerful) Office 97 will be better than Office
2003, etc.

Only other addition in today's world? ZoneAlarm free - need to have two
firewalls running under Windows IMO because too many security flaws might
penetrate the Windows default alone.

Oh, and a virus scanner - Norton 2002 works fine (simply reinstall yearly, or
use ZoneAlarm to prevent it from going to the internet, and set the date to
2020 first before installing it and rebooting twice if you do manual updates
that'll let it run longer). AVG free is another decent choice.
