From: Anders:

I had the same problem that you have. Try NetVeda Safety.Net, it's free and seems fast an efficient. You can find it at download.com.

Thanks for the pointer Anders... I'll give it a try.

From: Philip Nienhuis:

How long is "so long"?

Here's a comparision:

L100\W98SE\Norton2000FW

25 seconds - From powering on until desktop appears.
40 seconds - To stop of HDD activity & Norton firewall loaded.

L110\W98SE\ZoneAlarmFW

18 seconds - From hitting W98 at W2K boot menu until desktop appears.
72 seconds - To stop of HDD activity & ZA firewall loaded.

I have the same problem with ZA on the desktop. ZA is the last to load, and bogs down the boot to desktop process. I've been keeping ZA updated to the newest versions for security purposes. The newer versions take much more time to boot than the older ones did.

I still run ZA 2.6.<something> on all my Windows installations

You must have a Pro version installed, not the free version that is currently at v6.1.737 ... How does your version compare to mine as far as load times in W98SE?

only "nag" is a start-up screen displaying for 3 or 4 seconds.

That seems to be just in W2K.... right?

Some alternatives:

^___ Anyone tryied these?

BTW, I could download Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 just a minute ago through the pcworld link above.....

Sure... the older versions are still out there. But try this URL on the Sygate site for downloading their free 'Personal Firewall':
