But wouldn't that require at least one manual installation of the filter
driver by the user, and therefore equate what we can already provide
with WCID on non Windows platforms, where one WCID WinUSB driver
installation is enough the make the platform behave the same way as
Windows 8 in terms of detecting and automatically installing drivers?

The latest Zadig can turn any XP or later platform as a WCID-enabled
platform through a single driver installation. It's also not limited to
WinUSB only, but will happily do libusb0 and libusbK WCID enabling too.

Thus, unless, I'm misunderstanding something, going with the filter
driver won't make much of a difference in terms of user experience. On
the contrary, the way we are doing it at the moment ensures that we
bring the same the Windows 8 WinUSB-WCID experience to earlier
platforms, including the way the device will be listed in device
manager, etc.

All in all, as long as an initial driver installation cannot be avoided,
we might as well go with the Microsoft solution.

That's not to say I wouldn't be curious about an implementation of your
proposal as well, but I fail to see how spending time on that will
benefit us right now.

/Pete
