Actually I think this is probably the way to go. Documenting that
the _detach call is only functional under Linux and does nothing
for other OS (just return success).

I do not think that day will happen anytime soon. There are too many
codes out there depending on the _detach call under Linux which
happens to be one of the top platforms for libusb/libusbx.
