Just to confirm this is out there, I have had much the same thing,
with a few differences... and it has only happened once. I was
exchanging IMs with a Mac user, and she copied in something from an
e-mail. In the copied text, everywhere there should have been a space,
there was instead an � character (using the default charset; when I
changed it to ISO-8859-15, for instance, the � became a question mark).
When I tried to receive the next message from her, Licq froze (may have
been a segfault behind the scenes, but KCrash did not come up). If I
recall correctly, this happened several times until I edited her
history file and removed what looked like a 3-character bogus message
- -- as you have seen, though different characters. Next time I started
Licq, I was able to converse normally.
Mine is Licq 1.1.0/SSL, compiled on 18 Feb from the "daily" tarball,
running under KDE 2.2.1.
