I've just been studying exactly what Trevor says, and agree with him
completely. I think the algorithm used in current stable (2.16) has too
great a tendency to place dots above the relevant notehead rather than
shifting them down. If you look at my test case in comment 55, the dot is
added at the top on 6 occasions, but at the bottom only twice.
Furthermore, I do believe that her guidance will reduce the number of dots
(as noteheads increase) at one point - where there would otherwise be a dot
a least 2 spaces away.
