Hmmm... I could use
      \override Score.BarLine.layer = #-1
      \override Score.BarLine.whiteout = ##t
to move the barline behind the staff lines. But if I want to whiteout the
staff lines as well, that doesn't help anymore.
Or is there a way to place an object and its whiteout "clones" into
different layers?

Cheers,
Klaus
