I am well aware that as a software developer if I can't provide a way

There is nothing on that current installation that might be a remnant
from an older installation? Otherwise I'd suggested to delete the config
file (with/without backup) and try again (it's in
~/.config/frescobaldi/frescobaldi.conf).
