Thank you for sharing the Gould excerpt. Her book is on my gift wish list!

My current thinking is that within this email thread and any commands that
we (might) embed into LilyPond, we should use “hint notes” as the term for
the discretionary symbols. As my Tallis example shows, these are not
necessarily or always enharmonic equivalent pitches.

On the other/related topic of custodes properly speaking: thank you, Lukas
and Harm, for weighing in and opening a GitLab issue!
