I have a variable for each voice that tends to stay in a particular voice, like \voiceOne, but I often drop into \oneVoice and back if needed. It's not unusual for me to write: \voiceTwo a4 b c d | \oneVoice r2 \voiceTwo c4 d ...or something similar. I don't think there's any pentalty for jumping between a voice and \oneVoice over and over. I also put breaks in their own variable, not in the music, if that helps. -- Knute Snortum
