I always use R*3/4*1 the 1 can be replaced by the number of bars rest you want - 3/4 is the time signtaure.
You also need \set Score.skipBars = ##t if more than one bars rest. R*x/y*n is better than any rn because the whole bar rest is centered in the bar Learning Lilypond is easy at first but as your demands increase so does the difficulty - good luck on your journey.
