The GIMP has become my right-hand man. Primarily these days for editing
scanned photos, but it can do so much more.

Run, don't walk, to your nearest archive and pick up Povray. My impression
is that it's the de facto ray tracing program for Unix (and maybe your
Rayshade was actually Povray, who knows). I never messed with it much, but
I've seen some incredible work done with it.
