Hi everyone. I see that the music on Linux has become a hot topic
here, but as my interests run more toward the visual -- my current
machine doesn't have a sound card by design, and the only sounds my
old machine ever made was a loud "wheer, wheer, wheeeeeer" as the
power supply died -- I thought I'd post a note and see what happens...

At any rate, I've been dabbling with rendering images and animation
(sometime raytraced, sometimes not) for several years, using various
software (primarily Lightwave 3D) on an old Amiga (as if there was any
other kind these days). I think I'm familiar with most of the most
popular graphical software available for Linux (XV, ImageMagick, the
GIMP), and I've used some of it and probably will end up using most of
the rest sooner or later. So, I'm curious what other people use, and
what they use it to do...

I'm primarily interested to know if anyone has done any significant
rendering work, as I'm not really sure what modelling software or
rendering engines are available for Linux these days (freeware or
not). Once upon a time I dabbled with Rayshade (I think it was -- it
was a long time ago), but as I recall, there wasn't any reasonable
modelling software at the time, and I'd like to know if that's
changed.

Most of the images on my web pages were done a long time ago, so the
extent of my usage of Linux to produce them was to use XV to change
image formats, resize them, and so forth. My current desire to use
Linux for things creative is more theoretical than actual, and since I
heavily use Linux for other things (is programming really an art?), I
would like to know what's out there.
