nice to meet everyone here, and kudos to michael for thinking this up.
i've been gradually weaning myself from the need to ever boot into
windows. among the things i rely on windows for, however, is my music
software. i use cubase score for creating midi files and printing
them out. i paid a ludicrous amount of money for this program, only
to find that the company that makes it basically doesn't give a damn
that it's full of bugs. it's very full-featured and powerful, but it
has very basic problems that make it incredibly frustrating. the main
one i'm banging my head against now is that i've got a 41-page
orchestral score to print, and after the first 13 pages, it starts
printing only the top 2/3 of each page, stopping around the first
violins. no one seems to know (or care) why.

so, i'm wondering what people use for these sorts of musical tasks
under linux. i've looked at the gnu lilypond project and find it
quite appealing, and i've seen that there are several midi sequencers
around, in various stages of completedness. does anyone have opinions
on which of these are worth pursuing?

of course, some day i'll actually have to get my soundblaster awe32 to
play midi files under linux as well as audio files; until then, some
of this is a bit moot. :)

thanks for any ideas on the above,
