I've used both LaTeX and the free version of WordPerfect for a
12-page, multicolumn newsletter with graphics, and I found LaTeX
easier.  But I'm not really very familiar with using any word
processing software for serious layout -- obviously it's possible to
get better results than I did.

The WordPerfect was fairly buggy -- it barfed on several .gif files
that other programs have no trouble with, and crashed on me several
times.
