Hi all,
By now, you probably recognize me as 'that "Light Princess"
guy who keeps bugging us for help'. :)

But seriously, I had somebody write me the following offer
for working on music for the game:

> Like I just said, I compose and track music on computer, using the tracking
> software Impulse Tracker 2.14, which means that I generate IT module files.
[...]
> The type of files I work with can be converted into WAV and, of course, into
> any other format that derives from WAV. If you don't have any idea what
> module files are, think about Unreal, Unreal Tournament, and Crusader:No
> Regret; the music files are modules, generated with software similar that
> the one I use. The most common module file extensions you can find on the
> net are MOD, S3M, XM and IT.

I need game output to be through the SDL (Simple Directmedia Layer)
multimedia library, which uses esound, etc, and of course,
the game is open-source. So I need to know:

1) Are these proprietary or open formats? If proprietary, is
there a sufficiently stable standard to consider a de-facto
open standard? Or can they be converted to an alternative,
   open module format?

2) Are there libraries capable of loading and playing these formats
through the SDL sound system (i.e. through esound).

3) Are there utilities I can use to listen to his work on Linux?
He's only given me links to Windows plugins to do it, so that
   doesn't get me anywhere.

Please pardon my ignorance of sound and music technology! I
could also use some help specifying how the sound ought to
be done in our game engine, so if you're interested, let me
know. :)

Thanks!
Terry
