What soundcard ? It matters...

I use a SBLive Value to do what you're asking. If I want to process an
input channel (say the CD player) and hear only the processed output I
have to activate and adjust the input gain channel. Btw, I'm using the
ALSA 0.5.11 driver.

Also need to know:

  What sound driver are you using ? 

  What happens with 'cat /dev/sndstat' or 'cat /proc/asound/cards' ?

  What distro (RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake...) ?
