Hello Christina,

The pre-treatment process that we perform uses a brine solution. Brine is
a mixture of water and salt. Application of the pre-treatment process has
been very successful so far for us. Applying it prior to a storm event
allows the snow or ice to melt as soon as it hits the pavement and thus
prevents a bond between the ice and the pavement surface.

We use techniques such as the pre-treatment process and saddle tanks to
minimize material used during winter storm events while still providing for
important public safety.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the DPW
office at 781-259-8999.

Hi Christina,

I don’t think it’s salt.

Back in the dinosaur days, when I was on the BoS (not Select Board yet), we
authorized a new mix for pre-treating roads.

As best as I can recall, it dod not include salt, but memory may fail me
and maybe things have changed.

Chris Bibbo (copied here) is DPW Superintendent and should have the answer.

Just wondering about road salting. Did Lincoln change its policy? For years
we didn't salt because it was bad for the trees, etc. But there's
definitely been salt on the roads lately.

Citing danger to freshwater, scientists say we need to put brakes on road
salts. De-icing salts end up contaminating lakes and streams and building
up in wetlands. The pollution also affects our drinking water. By Erin
