Having lived in Lincoln for more than 40 years, I remember a time when the
roads were so icy and unsafe that there were deaths at the entrance to Route 2
from Lexington Road and on Sandy Pond Road as well as many non-deadly accidents.

Chris Bibbo and the DPW have been doing a terrific job of keeping the roads
safe to drive. My thanks and hats off to them!

Pre-treating with brine is not all that they’re putting on the roads. We
collected 30 lbs of rock salt that was spilled at the top of our driveway last
week when the town must have been prepping for bad weather. We are surrounded
by wetlands.

Hello Christina,

The pre-treatment process that we perform uses a brine solution. Brine is a
mixture of water and salt. Application of the pre-treatment process has been
very successful so far for us. Applying it prior to a storm event allows the
snow or ice to melt as soon as it hits the pavement and thus prevents a bond
between the ice and the pavement surface.

We use techniques such as the pre-treatment process and saddle tanks to
minimize material used during winter storm events while still providing for
important public safety.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the DPW office
at 781-259-8999.

Hi Christina,

I don’t think it’s salt.

Back in the dinosaur days, when I was on the BoS (not Select Board yet), we
authorized a new mix for pre-treating roads.

As best as I can recall, it dod not include salt, but memory may fail me and
maybe things have changed.

Chris Bibbo (copied here) is DPW Superintendent and should have the answer.

Just wondering about road salting. Did Lincoln change its policy? For years we
didn't salt because it was bad for the trees, etc. But there's definitely been
salt on the roads lately.

For anyone who missed it: this piece in the WaPo.

Citing danger to freshwater, scientists say we need to put brakes on road
salts. De-icing salts end up contaminating lakes and streams and building up in
wetlands. The pollution also affects our drinking water. By Erin Blakemore
