I have solved it! I put up L brackets on the side of the house they were boring 
into and hung old CDs from them with wire. The CDs are shiny and move with the 
wind and they completely stymie the woodpeckers. 

Of course you have to be okay with CDs hanging from L brackets on the outside 
of your house. It’s, um, a conversation starter to say the least.
