Could somebody please provide background information regarding the
environmental damage that Freeport have caused. Is there any published
scientific papers, technical reports, etc documenting this damage? I would
appreciate it very much if citation (at least the author and year of
publication) is included in the discussion. The inclusion of citations
would convey massages that such data exist; and discussion are based on
something real and not illusion.

Subject: Re: [lingkungan] Re: Bruce ---Freeeeeeeeport ?
Since there is no response to Rusdian's questions, I rather start by
focusing the discussion on the level of environmental degradation caused by
FI's operations.
I believe all of us will agree that environmental concerns had been placed
as the least priority by the past regime during the past 30 years. All of
us, public in general, media, NGOs, government have to fairly shoulder the
blame... we were not strong enough to change the situation. Therefore, let
us think about what is needed to be done next but not to find out who was
the culprit??
The fact that environmental degradation associated with FI's operations has
now gotten worse is unavoidable and almost all of the impact is irreversible
should not be considered like un-paid debts. The ground role for unpaid
debts is clearer than that for restoring environmental damages.
In this context, could I have please some responses from whoever knows about
FI's operation on the following subjects:
(i) whether the present damage could be restored?? at what level ?/ (I
understand that the restoration should not be designed to achieve the prime
conditions)
(ii) who is (are) going to restore the damage ?? government (local/central?)
or FI or others
(iii)how much $$$ will be needed? and how long will the effort to restore
the damage be ??
(iv)how much $$$ FI has generated from its operation since the early 70s??
and how much $$$ will still be generated if the FI's operation continue at
the same level of destruction
(v) lastly, could somebody please voluntarily do the B/C analysis? and of
course help to find out other missing data
Let's us do analysis and discuss this subject professionally (e.g. as
businessperson, environmental specialists, mining specialists) no political
pressures ... .please and do not be too emotional.
Terimaksih,
