If all you want is simply an image with an embedded alpha channel, I would recommend 
using TIFF format.  With no compression, it's
the highest quality format.  And the linked image idea is a good solution.

You can link to an external .PNG or 32 bit bitmap. That would give
you a member that would have an alpha channel when placed as a Copy
ink sprite.
