That's true, but of course there wasn't anything in the question that
stated otherwise. If in fact the app is not loading from the CD, then
something somewhere likely did an installation, and it makes most
sense to simply write out the CD drive letter in a prefs file during
that process.
If the argument is that there's no way at all to predict, from
program session to program session, where the CD is, the best thing
to do is toss up an open file dialog.
If there's a chance the CD went missing, a failsafe would be to test
for the existence of the drive/file, and if it's not found, kick up a
dialog again.
