This got me to thinking. I know what Colin's referring to -- the
option in Director that used to be called "Playback head follows
selection" -- but that's not a settable feature any more.
So I returned to my Classic extensions manager and started looking
for likely culprits.
Hmm, OK... so I can lose all the printer extensions, and I can lose
all the ColorSync stuff. Done.
Didn't make a bit o' difference though. Director still dumped.
And THEN I took a close look at my third-party INITs. There were
about a dozen Microsoft extensions, all having to do with OLE.
Oho. Well OLE lets you *drag and drop* objects from one doc to
another, embedding code, links, references, etc. -- say, a
spreadsheet inside a Word document.
The operative term here is "drag and drop".
Aha, thinks I, I'll purge these too. Did it.
While it didn't totally nuke the problems, it does seem to have
increased stability considerably.
I'd be interested to hear of others who have Classic, who have fired
up the extensions manager and disabled all the MS inits (list
following), and specifically whether it worked.
Oh -- Classic in general is much faster now. Windows redraw more
quickly, etc. In a way this makes sense. Since there's no longer a
code engine trying to make logic out of every drag and drop I do,
particularly out of one frame and into another in any given app,
well...
