This is essential. You have to take a stand, and demand machine specs - unless they can tell you what the machine is made up of, you can't support it. Otherwise, you're guessing in the dark. I'd get software specs, too - you never know what might be installed that conflicts with your app. If they aren't computer-literate enough to give you specs, walk them through the process until you get all of the info you need. Push them on it. Answer any complaints with "I haven't received full specs on problem machines - please provide." Asking is not the same as telling.
