Director will only output files of the same version as itself, so for SW 8.0 you will need D8.0. Director movies (.dir) are not backwards compatible, so D8 won't open your D8.5 files. I have heard of two ways to open newer fileVersions in older appVersions: 1: Somebody (Colin?) once posted a hexEditor trick, whereby you could downgrade a movie. I tested this trick, and it appeared to work. It is of course provided that you do not use any features not available in the older format. I don't remember where the trick is documented, so go search. 2: Some people have devised lingo to parse the structure of a movie into another kind of data-format, such as vList, and then re-import that in an older appVersion. Maybe the lingo for doing so is publicly available. (go search) If you really need to go back, it is possible.
